Supporting .US: 17 Proud Years and Counting
I’m excited to share the news that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) has renewed Neustar’s contract to continue operating the .US Top-Level Domain (.US), the official country code domain of the United States.
We’re so proud of the strong relationship and productive partnership we’ve built with the NTIA and the U.S. Department of Commerce over the last 17 years, since Neustar was first appointed to launch .US in 2001.
During our stewardship, we’ve safely and responsibly grown the second-level .US namespace to more than 2 million domains under management, despite the increasingly complex and competitive market conditions since the introduction of new TLDs. Rising to the NTIA’s challenge, for the past five years we have operated .US as a multi-stakeholder endeavor, which has driven our collaboration and partnerships with industry associations, consumer groups, corporate enterprise, Registrars, resellers, registrants, locality managers, the U.S. Government, and global internet users.
This collaborative approach has helped us to quickly and effectively address some the biggest challenges facing our industry – such as cybersecurity and domain abuse. A recent highlight was working directly with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to stem the sale of illegal opioids in the .US namespace and having the opportunity to share our results with our colleagues in the domain industry.
The renewal of the .US contract has naturally sparked much reflection, nostalgia and pride in the Neustar Registry team, as we look back upon the achievements of the last 17 years. But as proud as we are of the past, we’re even more excited about the future. We’re committed to ensuring that the .US domain continues to embody the American dream, providing a trusted, stable, and secure namespace for all internet users, while fostering economic growth and digital innovation, and preparing the next generation of Americans for leadership in the global digital economy.
This is an ambitious goal. But it is precisely the kind of ambition that drives the individuals, businesses, non-profits, community groups, couples, families, startups, veterans, dreamers, makers and more who are building their future on .US – so we are in good company, and we’re confident in our ability to deliver on this vision.
