1. What are the top three things you enjoy about your career in sales?
Tanya: Helping solve problems, learning about new data and products, and working with brilliant people.
Chas: I love helping my clients solve problems and the relationships that come with this career, I enjoy the freedom to “run my own business” with the support of so many outstanding professionals, and I enjoy having very quantifiable measurements of success and the rewards that come with it.
Vivek: Helping drive clients’ growth and success by solving different challenges, collaborating with team members to put our best foot forward in all client interactions, and winning plus all the rewards that come with it.
2. What is something you would want someone looking to change careers to know about working in tech sales?
Chas: Previous sales experience is no longer necessary to be successful. Rather, natural curiosity, strong internal drive, sincere interest in listening to and helping your clients, and the willingness to take calculated risks play bigger roles in sales success today.
Chris: There are a lot of opportunities to help solve problems that no one else in the market has solved for. Innovation and thinking outside the box are big drivers to success.
Vivek: One of the critical skills needed is a relentless focus on customer success. That means listening keenly to their problems, being super responsive to their requests, and bringing the right people to the conversation to help as needed. Sales is a team sport — your success is highly dependent on the team you work with.
3. What makes working in sales at Neustar so rewarding?
Andrew: I’ve worked at companies ranging from 12 people to 300,000 people. What I think is special about Neustar is I can access the same bright people for sales pitches, negotiations, and contracting through the entire process. Everyone is along for the ride.
Chris: I haven’t worked anywhere else for over a decade, so my opinions might be biased, but I can say that within the sales organization, it is the people that make Neustar better.
Martie: I moved on from Neustar a few years ago for another opportunity and chose to come back. Here’s why: Neustar has the most amazing team of people! This group is so dedicated to excellence, with an unmatched focus on the customer. You cannot help but to be inspired.
4. What has the opportunity for growth been in your role?
Tanya: It’s unlimited, and there’s always something else to learn. I can take on management and new verticals if I want to try something new. I’m a learner at heart and really like to dig into different products across a variety of use cases, so having the opportunity to try different things is important to me.
Andrew: I did not expect to be in sales for seven years. What has kept me here is the opportunity to expand into new markets and work with large auto and consumer packaged goods (CPG) clients. Ten years ago, I thought I would be managing a marketing team working for a single brand. Today, I am an individual contributor working across several brands at the CMO and CTO level. As I keep investing in Neustar, it continues to pay off.
Trip: I have received wonderful coaching and guidance from team members and supporting organizations, which allowed me to exceed my goals in each of my three years with a bookings quota. Each year I have received more accounts, support, and opportunity to scale my book of business. My leadership has demonstrated belief in me and continues to support my growth goals within Neustar.
5. What has been a driver of success for you since transitioning to a remote or hybrid work environment?
Andrew: As an introvert with learned extrovert skills, I have had to be mindful of healthy habits so I don’t burn out. To help, I have continued to invest time in a small circle of colleagues, mentors, and clients that are sources of encouragement and motivation. My manager has been very understanding of the way that I work. I like to sprint when it’s time to mobilize on a deal, but I also like to be there for my daughter’s swimming lessons or run to the store if dinner requires a missing ingredient.
Martie: Working remotely, I have more flexibility. I take advantage of the times I’m most creative to get my work done. I frequently start very early in the morning (sometimes at 4 a.m.), capturing ideas, planning, and problem-solving during the time when I’m in the best mindset.
Trip: Consistent support from the company. Neustar has had our best interest in mind through every step of this transition. Through home-office stipends, seamless communication systems, regular touchpoints and gathering of feedback, and a dedication to our values of collaboration and accountability, we have excelled through this environment.
